While total declines disbursement rises from January to May.
According to the Foreign Investment Agency (FIA), during the first five months of the year foreign direct investment (FDI) into Vietnam reached $4.29 billion, or 78 per cent of the figure for the same period last year. Disbursed FDI, though, increased 7.6 per cent year-on-year, to $4.95 billion.
Some 592 FDI projects with registered capital of nearly $2.95 billion were newly-registered, down 19.4 per cent year-on-year. Additional capital to 201 existing projects stood at $1.34 billion, down 27.1 per cent year-on-year.
Exports by the FDI sector, including crude oil, reached some $44. 37 billion during the period, up 12.2 per cent year-on-year and accounting for around 70 per cent of Vietnam’s total export revenue.
Meanwhile, the FDI sector spent some $9.67 billion on imports from January to May, a 23.2 per cent increase and accounting for 67 per cent of all import revenue.
In terms of sectors, the industry and manufacturing sector received the most FDI, at $3.15 billion in 269 newly-registered projects. Real estate ranked second, with $461.5 million, accounting for 10.7 per cent of all FDI.
Regarding investors, South Korea was the largest among the 47 countries investing in Vietnam during the period, with $1.1 billion, accounting for 25.7 per cent of the total. The British Virgin Islands, Turkey, and Japan were close behind.
Ho Chi Minh City attracted $983.5 million in FDI, leading the way over the five-month period. It was followed closely by southern Dong Nai province, with $948.7 million, and northern Hai Phong city, with $319.3 million.
