Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko arrived in Hanoi on the afternoon of February 28 to begin their State visit, which is scheduled to wrap up on March 5.

Made at the invitation of President Tran Dai Quang, the visit is the first ever to Vietnam by a Japanese Emperor and Empress.

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko were welcomed at Noi Bai International Airport by Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh and her spouse, and other senior officials.

On January 7, 1989, upon the death of Emperor Hirohito, posthumously known as Emperor Showa, His Majesty Emperor Akihito acceded the throne as the 125th Emperor of Japan.

Vietnam and Japan established diplomatic relations in September 1973 and elevated their ties in March 2014 to an extensive strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan, H.E. Nguyen Quoc Cuong, in an interview with the Vietnam News Agency, said the visit is an important landmark in Vietnam-Japan relations and a manifestation of the development of bilateral ties, which will bring the relationship to new heights.
