Minimum salary increases kick in

January 1 sees pay rises take effect under Decree No.103.

by Minh Tuyet

Decree No.103 has increased minimum salaries throughout Vietnam from January 1.

Minimum salaries are applicable in four different regions. The lowest and the highest increase in regional minimum salaries were $11.6 and $18.7, respectively.

The monthly minimum in Region I increased from $127 to $145, in accordance with Decree No.103. In Region II it rose from $113 to $129, from $98.7 to $113 in Region III, and from $89 to $101 in Region IV.

The Decree applies to all employees working for enterprises, cooperatives, farmers, families, individuals and organizations.

All of Ho Chi Minh City falls into Region 1, except for Can Gio district, which is in Region II. The City’s minimum salary is the highest in the country, at $145.

The minimum salary increase is significant, the International Labor Organization said, and brings the total increase to 14 per cent in the 2011-2013 period.

However, Towers and Watson Vietnam said the increase will be mostly absorbed by inflation, with the real increase coming in at only 0.3 per cent. Regardless, Vietnam’s increase to the minimum wage seems likely to among the highest in ASEAN.

Towers and Watson’s research also showed that the percentage increase in 2014 was 9.6 per cent, while it was 11.7 per cent in 2013, and so fell noticeably. The 2014 percentage increase in pharmacy was highest and was the lowest in insurance, at 11.2 per cent and 7.2 per cent, respectively.
