Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan re-elected with nearly 98% of votes from NA delegates.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan was voted into the position of Chairwoman of the 14th National Assembly (NA) and announced on July 22.
Nearly ninety-eight per cent of delegates voted for Ms. Ngan; the second time in just a few months she has been voted into the position.
In March this year Ms. Ngan, born in the Mekong Delta’s Ben Tre province and currently a Politburo member, was elected as NA Chairwoman of the 13th NA, with 95.5 per cent of votes.
“Under the national flag, I, the NA Chairwoman, swear to be totally loyal to the country, the people, and the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, to exert all my effort in completing the tasks that the Party, State and the people have entrusted me,” Ms. Ngan told the NA gathering on July 22.
“I, together with the NA delegates, will work hard to bring changes to improve our work, so that the NA is united and creative and acts in the interest of the public and for the national pride and sustainable development of our country.”
Ms. Ngan was Deputy Chairwoman of the NA for many years before being elected as Chairwoman in March. She was appointed as the Director of the Ben Tre Department of Finance in 1991 before being promoted to Deputy Minister of Finance in 1995.
In 2002 she was appointed Party Chief of northern Hai Duong province, becoming the first ever southern leader to hold such a position in a northern locality.
She was promoted to Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs in 2007 and soon after became Vice Chairwoman of the country’s legislature in 2011 and becoming a Politburo member in 2013.
On July 21 the NA also voted for four Vice Chairs of the legislature and the NA Standing Committee, which has 18 members.
New faces on the committee are Mr. Nguyen Khac Dinh, Deputy Chairman of the Office of the Government, Mr. Phan Thanh Binh, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City National University, and Mr. Vu Hong Thanh, Deputy Party Chief of Quang Ninh province.
This is the 14th tenure of the NA following the May elections of 496 delegates. Some 160 were re-elected. The final number now stands at 494 following two dismissals.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Nguyet Huong, NA delegate for Hanoi and Chairwoman of TNG Holdings, a private concern specializing in developing industrial parks in the north, was dismissed on July 17 due to holding dual citizenship.
Mr. Trinh Xuan Thanh, NA delegate for the Mekong Delta’s Hau Giang province, was forced to “take responsibility” for losses of some VND3.2 trillion ($142 million) during his days at the helm of the PetroVietnam Construction Corporation (PVC). He was dismissed on July 15.
The first session of the 14th NA will last to July 29.
