High-ranking delegation visiting US from July 6 to 10.
Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is leading a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation on an official visit to the US at the invitation of the US administration from July 6 to 10.
He is being accompanied by Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly Tong Thi Phong, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Le Thanh Hai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh, Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for External Relations Hoang Binh Quan, Deputy Minister of Defense To Lam, Deputy Minister of Public Security To Lam, and Vietnamese Ambassador to the US, H.E. Pham Quang Vinh.
There are also representatives of war veterans, religious dignitaries, intellectuals and entrepreneurs within the delegation.
On July 6 (local time) he and the Vietnamese delegation arrived at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington D.C, where they were welcomed by Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary to the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Mr. Scot Marciel, US Ambassador to Vietnam, H.E. Ted Osius, overseas Vietnamese in the US, and diplomats from ASEAN countries in the US.
This is the first time a General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam has visited the US.
The visit takes place at an important time as the two countries mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties and the second anniversary of establishing a comprehensive partnership.
Party General Secretary Trong will hold talks with US President Barak Obama to evaluate the bilateral ties over the last 20 years and set key orientations for the time to come.
