Government considering plan before submission to NA and Politburo.
A plan for establishing the Phu Quoc Economic Zone is being improved by the government and will be considered for submission to the National Assembly and the Politburo, a conference on Phu Quoc Island’s economic results in the first half of the year on August 3 in Kien Giang province was told.
The plan was completed by Kien Giang province and then submitted to the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) at the end of last year. The Prime Minister corrected every word and sentence, the Chairman of the Kien Giang Provincial People’s Committee Le Van Thi province revealed. He added that MPI was asked to submit the plan to the Politburo on behalf of the government.
In May a delegation of the department for the development of Phu Quoc Island went to Macau to study its experience in compiling socio-economic policies, building casinos and harbors, and improving services, Deputy Head of the Steering Committee for the Southwestern Region, Nguyen Phong Quang, said.
Under Decision No. 80 from the Prime Minister on mechanisms to develop Phu Quoc Island it has had a harbor, airport, and electricity network built, helping to attract investment and developing tourism on the island, Mr. Thi said.
Phu Quoc has issued business licenses to 164 projects (including 21 FDI projects) to date with total capital of $7.7 billion. Twenty-three projects are in operation with total capital of $1.18 billion and 14, with capital of $521.79 million, are being completed.
