Go-ahead given during working visit to northern province.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has accepted a proposal to build an airport in northern Lai Chau province and asked the Ministry of Transport and Ministry of National Defense to ensure the project proceeds on schedule, when working with provincial leaders on April 22.
Secretary of the Lai Chau Provincial Party Committee, Mr. Nguyen Khac Chu, expects the government will provide directions and supporting policies for the province regarding improvements to infrastructure, including key projects such as the airport and a road connecting the province with the Hanoi - Lao Cai Highway.
Lai Chau Airport is estimated to need investment of VND8 trillion ($358.7 million),with construction in two phases. Investment for the first period is VND4 trillion ($179.3 million).
The airport will have dual purposes: national defense and civil use.
The project roadmap must be considered by the Ministry of National Defense, the Prime Minister said.
Minister and Chairman of the Office of the Government, Mr. Mai Tien Dung, said the airport will primarily cater to small aircraft and helicopters and be under the management of the Ministry of National Defense. The Office of the Government has asked the Ministry to quickly determine issues regarding management and use.
The Prime Minister also asked that Lai Chau focus on tasks such as investment attraction, economic restructuring, enhancing product quality, and applying agricultural technology.
