Seven tasks set while Long Thanh Airport built

Minister of Transport talks about next steps for airport construction now approval has come from NA.

“I very much appreciate that the National Assembly (NA) has passed the project to build the Long Thanh International Airport,” Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang told the media on June 25, adding that an auction will be held to select consultants to prepare the feasibility report.

Moving ahead

Minister Thang said the NA had asked the government to conduct the project and engaging an independent consultant for the feasibility study would be the top priority. ODA capital will not be used in the selection process, to ensure independence and objectivity.

According to the NA Resolution, the government will lead in the subsequent steps to accelerate the pace of the project.

Regarding capital management and investment processes, project preparations will be strictly conducted.

“It will take from two to three years to approve the feasibility study,” the Minister said. “This will be done property so the project begins quickly and eases the pressure on Tan Son Nhat International Airport as soon as possible.”

In site clearance, the government, the Ministry of Transport, and the Dong Nai Provincial People’s Committee have prepared a detailed report on compensation and resettlement. Local residents have accepted the work done so far, he said.

He added that there were many foreign investors interested in the project. Until the feasibility report is completed, however, there will be no decisions made on investors.

Seven tasks

According to the NA Resolution, seven basic tasks have been set.

Firstly, the government must approve the plan and determine the economic and technological standards for the operations and management of the Airport.

Secondly, the government must adopt particular plans to direct land acquisition, pay compensation, conduct the resettlement of affected residents, and build socio-economic infrastructure.

Thirdly, the government will build infrastructure and synchronize the development of transport networks and the Airport.

Fourthly, it will ensure safety, timeliness, quality, and socio-economic efficiency, prevent waste and negative practices in the investment process, evaluate the impact on the environment, adopt solutions to protect the environment where necessary, and mobilize investment capital from all sources.

Fifthly, human resources will be fully trained to operate the Airport.

Sixthly, during construction, Tan Son Nhat International Airport must operate efficiently.

Finally, information on Long Thanh International Airport is to be published widely in the community.
