Party Chief and People's Council Chairman shot dead by head of province's Forest Protection Bureau on August 18.
Two senior leaders of northern Yen Bai province were shot dead by a local official on the morning of August 18, shortly before the People’s Council meeting.
Party Chief Mr. Pham Duy Cuong and Mr. Ngo Ngoc Tuan, Chairman of the Yen Bai People’s Council, were shot dead by Mr. Do Cuong Minh, Chief of the province’s Forest Protection Bureau, Vietnam News Agency has reported.
The shooting occurred at Mr. Cuong and Mr. Tuan’s offices at 7.45am, minutes before the opening of the People’s Council meeting. Mr. Minh was reported to have then shot himself.
Both leaders are reported to have died on the way to hospital while Mr. Minh died in hospital, according to Yen Bai Hospital.
The police are investigating. Officials from the Ministry of Public Security have gone to the province.
No reason for the shootings has been established as at the time of writing.
Mr. Cuong, 58, was re-elected as Party Chief last October while Mr. Tuan, 52, became Chairman in June. Mr. Minh, 53, has been the Chief of the Forest Protection Bureau since 2014.
Yen Bai, a mountainous province of nearly 800,000, is home to several ethnic minorities and is heavily covered by forests. It is 160 km northwest of Hanoi.
