“Vietnam is ready for the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2020 in terms of organizational structure, human resources, projects, and overall action plans,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Ngo Toan Thang told a press conference on November 7. “It has prepared topics and priorities and will open an official website shortly.”

In the immediate future, Vietnam will focus on preparing for the first major event, the “ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting”, which will take place in January in south-central Khanh Hoa province.

With the theme “Integrity and Proactive Adaptation”, Vietnam will host more than 300 activities, in particular the 36th ASEAN Summit held in April and the 37th ASEAN Summit and related summits in November. It will also organize cultural, artistic, and tourist activities to introduce and promote the country’s unique cultural values among ASEAN countries and dialogue countries. It is expected that Vietnam will soon hold a ceremony announcing the logo and opening the official website.

“Vietnam will continue to develop ideas and initiatives set out for its ASEAN Chairmanship, creating unity and consensus in ASEAN,” the spokesman said.

Earlier, on November 4 in Bangkok, during a ceremony officially transferring the role of ASEAN Chairman from Thailand to Vietnam, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc announced topics and some major orientations for Vietnam’s year as ASEAN Chairman.

2020 is a pivotal year in implementing the “ASEAN Vision 2025” and also the 25th anniversary of Vietnam joining the bloc.

Vietnam has actively exchanged and consulted with other ASEAN countries and partners to develop topics, priorities, and initiatives for its term as ASEAN Chairman.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said the country will make every effort to further strengthen solidarity and consensus in ASEAN, push regional integration and connectivity, promote ASEAN’s similarities, and enhance its participation and institutional capacity in the global community.
